Description
Sulfur dioxide, with the chemical formula SO2, is the simplest and most common sulfur oxide. It is a colorless, transparent gas with a pungent odor at room temperature and pressure. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. It dissolves in water to form dibasic medium-strong acid sulfurous acid (H2SO3) with bleaching properties. It can form colorless compounds when combined with organic pigments.

Food Industry
Sulfur dioxide is a commonly used food preservative, used to preserve fruits, vegetables, dried fruits, wine, etc. It has the functions of sterilization, oxidation prevention, and extending the shelf life of food. In winemaking, sulfur dioxide acts as an antibiotic and antioxidant to prevent wine from being damaged and oxidized by bacteria, and helps keep the volatile acidity within an appropriate range.
Chemical Industry
Sulfur dioxide is widely used in fertilizers, pigments, rubber, plastics, plant ash, silicate industry and other fields. It is an important raw material for the manufacture of sulfuric acid fertilizers, used for the synthesis of pigments, rubber transparent agents and plastic softeners, etc. In addition, sulfur dioxide can also be used to prepare sulfuric acid, which is done by converting it into sulfur trioxide, then into fuming sulfuric acid, and finally sulfuric acid.
Pharmaceutical Industry
In the pharmaceutical industry, sulfur dioxide is used as a reducing agent, disinfectant and acidifying agent, participates in the synthesis of specific organic compounds, and acts as a disinfectant to prevent bacterial contamination.
In Float Glass Production
The application of sulfur dioxide in glass manufacturing is mainly concentrated in regulating the atmosphere of the melting furnace, desulfurization, coloring, and waste gas treatment.
Other Applications
Sulfur dioxide is also used as a bleaching agent, refrigerant and reagent solvent. It can be used as a bleaching agent in the food and pulp industries to remove pigments and impurities; due to its easy liquefaction and high heat of vaporization, it has been used as a refrigerant; liquid sulfur dioxide is also widely used as an inert solvent.
