Description:
Ethane is an organic compound, a colorless and odorless gas, insoluble in water. It is the second member of the alkane series and the simplest hydrocarbon containing a carbon-carbon single bond. The content of ethane in some natural gas is 5% to 10%, second only to methane; and it exists in petroleum in a dissolved state. Ethane can be separated from oil fields, and can also be obtained from refinery gas separation and cracking gas separation.
Typical Application:
Cracking To Make Ethylene
Ethane is primarily used in the chemical industry to produce ethylene via steam cracking at temperatures above 900°C, breaking heavy hydrocarbons into lighter ones.
Refrigerant
Ethane serves as a refrigerant and in electron microscopy, rapidly freezing water samples at -150°C to prevent crystal formation.
Used As A Fuel
Ethane is a common combustible gas and is often stored in liquefied steel cylinders as a gas fuel. Ethane is often used for home heating, cooking and industrial heating.
Organic Synthesis
Ethane serves as an intermediate in synthesizing acetic acid, ethanol, ethylene, ethyl chloride, nitroethane, polyvinyl acetate, ethyl cellulose, and ethylene oxide.
Calibration/Mixture Gases
Ethane serves as a calibration gas in industries like chemical, petroleum, and aviation, as well as in scientific research.
